Goals and Themes
The workshop will focus on several themes which have been found to be promising practices for advancement of women. Each theme is aligned with a specific goal for the overall ASCENT program.
Goal: Ensure that junior women scientists know about and have access to resources and people who can help guide them through their career and life path.
Associated themes include:
- Balancing a family and career; the biological clock vs. the tenure clock.
- Saying "no" to requests for time.
Goal: Encourage positive mentorship and create mentoring opportunities.
Associated themes include:
- How do you open yourself to becoming a mentor for others?
Goal: Learn and teach others about the primary obstacles for women in atmospheric science and meteorological fields, and develop or share communication tools to assist in navigating these obstacles.
Associated themes include:
- Negotiating a faculty position focused on post-doctoral researchers.
- Inclusionary teaching of 100-level courses.
- Talking and reporting to your program manager and supervisor.
Goal: Meet potential scientific collaborators at other institutions.
The workshop will take place in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
A group activity will be organized each afternoon or evening during the workshop to provide participants a social networking opportunity and retreat from the daily routine of the workshop. Activities will include visiting local waterfalls, a tour of Storm Peak Laboratory, and visiting local hot springs.
